People are still not on board with this and still feel its all overblown and hype. Areas are slow to adapt the suggestions from the CDC and Government. Perhaps, it should be mandatory.

Trump has spent the last 4 years lying daily, so I get that, but the very nature of our society is choice not government mandate and any solution must be within that framework.

At the expense of human life? Also, by all accounts, the longer this goes on the worse its going to be on peoples paychecks and the economy. So, the extreme measures, also by all accounts, are what will be most effective.

Well, the government shouldn’t “choose” to not do something that could save lives. You had an earlier post about us not being able to put cops (or troops?) in the streets and forcing people, which I agree with. But at some point we’ll have to have a “shelter in place” type order, knowing that some small % of people won’t obey it. That’s at least a strong statement from authorities that most people will probably follow for the most part. UBI or other free money schemes is a solution to the economic damage, not the disease itself. Mostly.

I was just saying that any successful action against a real epidemic is going to look like an overreaction to most people in hindsight, because the only effective way you can handle one is to stop it before it becomes a real problem.

edit: On the other hand, it wouldn't surprise me at all if we get reports next year showing that initial death or infection rates were drastically overstated, and it will get no attention and be buried.

No, it’s what can they do differently now. With the stability of the world at stake it makes more sense to live in the present tense. We are not China. The government cannot send soldiers into the homes of factory workers and demand they make test kits and masks. Think about the effect right now of a scene where a bunch of black kids are playing in the street in some random city when an APC rolls up and out hops a dozen roided up national guardsmen from bumfuck Arkansas to enforce a curfew.

And honestly, do you really think crowds of spring breakers / millennials / zoomers were gonna listen to Trump either way?
