That author is also the only person in the known universe that could paint Obama as an uncharismatic robot. Even his worst enemies know that's not true.

I'm sympathetic to the observation that the carefully uncontroversial, obfuscatory style of contemporary political speech is very unappealing.
I'm not sure Trump is necessarily anything other than another bad option, his speaking manner strikes me as being quite strange, but I can see how its blatant unwillingness to conform to those modern politcal norms could be refreshing in some respects.

Statement Regarding Recent Executive Order Concerning Extreme Vetting
“America is a proud nation of immigrants and we will continue to show compassion to those fleeing oppression, but we will do so while protecting our own citizens and border. America has always been the land of the free and home of the brave.
We will keep it free and keep it safe, as the media knows, but refuses to say. My policy is similar to what President Obama did in 2011 when he banned visas for refugees from Iraq for six months. The seven countries named in the Executive Order are the same countries previously identified by the Obama administration as sources of terror. To be clear, this is not a Muslim ban, as the media is falsely reporting.
This is not about religion - this is about terror and keeping our country safe. There are over 40 different countries worldwide that are majority Muslim that are not affected by this order. We will again be issuing visas to all countries once we are sure we have reviewed and implemented the most secure policies over the next 90 days.
I have tremendous feeling for the people involved in this horrific humanitarian crisis in Syria. My first priority will always be to protect and serve our country, but as President I will find ways to help all those who are suffering

At the risk of sounding panicked, the thing that makes Trump makes sense in terms of his policies and his approach is that he is doing all of the things an autocrat does when trying to collect power. This isn't to say he has some kind of grand plan, it isn't to say it's purposeful and it isn't to say any of it will be successful. But in one week he's attempted to turn the media from a free press into "the enemy" as a means of delegitimizing criticism that may come his way. He's framed much of his controversial ideas around the idea of keeping us 'safe,' and has bristled at the idea of anyone protesting or criticizing him. He's coalesced national security power even more directly under his auspices with the promotion of Bannon and the demotion of the military.
Not all of this started with him, but he's exploiting it to his advantage. It's possible none of this will lead to success, but I've found it's the best way to understand his mindset, more than fitting him into a populist or Republican suit. It's also likely the reason he sucks up to Putin, more than him being a target of blackmail. He recognizes a fellow traveler.

I'm starting to think that every single thing he's done since he came into office is just a brilliant smokescreen so he can sow the seeds of (further) upheaval in the Middle East. Mark my words: We'll be engaged in war (or at least maneuvers) in the ME inside of a year, with Russian support. Divide and conquer, and maybe diminish the Muslim population while they're at it, and all the past week's news will have long since been proven unenforcible.
We are current engaged in combat in like 10 nations in that area and have been years. Outside of Iran, which even Trump would not attack, I'm not sure where else there is to hit.
