I can't speak for s2 because I never watched it, but I thought s3 wasn't bad.

I think alerting fauna is probably the reason. At first I thought it was to save face, like "we're leaving empty handed but only because we got an urgent call to attend, not because we got told to fuck right off", but bears makes (slightly) more sense.
