What are people's thoughts on King Animal? I think it peters out a bit toward the end, but it's a solid record. A Thousand Days Ago, Non-State Actor and By Crooked Steps are up there with their best.

There's someone on here that hates it. I think Dev? Pretty sure the general consensus is its a very solid album.

King Animal is awesome. It was like they never left, it fit with their old stuff so well.

I think it's great for the most part.

Given my somewhat tepid expectations, King Animal was without a doubt a solid effort. A Thousand Days Before is prime SG, easily among their top 10. Crooked Steps, Non-State, Valley Floor, Taree, Attrition were also great. Only songs I thought were outright duds are Halfway There and Rowing (mainly the vox for the latter). I genuinely look forward to their next outing as I think they still have a good bit left in the tank, not to mention they all seem to be in great spirits.

I really dig Rowing but playing along to the track live doesn't seem very Soundgarden.

I think the only dud is Halfway There, and only because it sounds way too much like solo Chris Cornell. Decent song, but not a good Soundgarden song.

Would anybody have any interest in getting my entire Soundgarden collection? I can no longer torrent and downloading is difficult, but I'm worried that if my external HD dies I think there's like 30-40 things that will be lost with it. I'll have to organize it a little better but as far as I can tell I have everything currently circulating through roughly 2013. I refused to download any of the 2014 shows without Matt Cameron but I think I have everything else. I have some video too, including some things not currently circulating because I don't have the time, patience or desire to torrent video. Among these is a (crappy quality shot from far away) video from a Big Day Out show in 1997 that is effectively impossible to find. I also have an uncirculated 1995 festival show that's fantastic (no, they don't play "Christi").

Does anybody have any ideas? I'd hate for this stuff to get lost forever if something goes wrong with my HD.

Curiously, what is the logic behind shows being "uncirculated"? I don't ask with any sort of preconceived agenda, I just have very little familiarity with that world. What compels a taper to record a show, but keep it only for himself or share it with only a select few?

Three reasons:
1) A desire to hoard the recording for future use to barter other uncirculated recordings
2) A desire to not piss off a band / artist that didn't want a recording / any recording of the show or session out in the open
3) A desire to be an asshole and hold on to the recording just to hold it over others

All three are pretty common, and have been as long as people have been trading bootlegs. I have a pretty large number of uncirculated recordings, most of them fitting the second category. Quite a few tapers have given me recordings with the instruction to not release them because they didn't want to get in trouble. Eventually they all get out, but to do so they usually have to be laundered - that is, passed through so many channels it's impossible to derive how they got out.

It's easy to respect a band's wishes, and I generally do so (there are some good examples of this, particularly when it comes to demos and studio sessions), but eventually any desirable recording will eventually surface if somebody has it.

I always keep my bootleg stuff on dvdr/cdr, all boxed up in the garage for the inevitable day when my HD takes a dump and dies. I know a few people who have transferred collections and binned the originals, only to lose everything down the line. Unless you're very unlucky with rot, the hard copies should survive in safe storage for a generation at least.

I have a lot of it backed up but my burner died about a year ago and I just haven't been able to back stuff up since then other than on HDs. There's just so much that after awhile it gets to be a pain to deal with. I'd love to figure out something to do with it but it's getting kind of overwhelming, since I also have the complete Nirvana and Pearl Jam collections, plus 200+ shows of Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins and Sonic Youth and tons of other shows by other bands.

Helsinki, 8/30/1995. The filmer contacted me and sent me a DVD. There's a lot of other stuff too that I've just never gotten around to circulating, including shows from 1989 up through 2013 that aren't in general circulation. There's not really anything earth-shattering but there is a lot of cool stuff. I'd hate to see it lost.

How many shows do you need circulated?

I buy external drives to back stuff up. I have everything backed up in at least two locations so if one drive goes stuff is still on another one. Its work to shuffle stuff around to multiple spots but hoarding media that I will most likely never watch, read, or listen to again has become a hobby.
