Part of me became a PJ fan because I still liked those guys (excluding GnR) but wanted something a bit cooler and louder.

Me too, and that's pretty surprising in the year 2013. It's almost like I'd rank it differently on two different lists. It wouldn't be as high on the technical proficiency list, but maybe on the emotional investment list it would be higher. But isn't that what it's all about at the end of the day? I wonder whether the people who praise "their PJ period" over and above others, like the middle period for example, feel the strongest emotional connection to it, regardless of, or because of, the technical musical proficiency of it? I don't know.
For me, the new album is going to ramp up the list for a couple of reasons. I like every single song from the leak. Some more than others, but will enjoy listening to them all. So its a win regardless of the ones that follow (Which have been the ones Ive been anticipating)
Secondly, Sirens is the first song in a loooooooooooong time that I have formed some sort of emotional attachment to. There have been songs that have been close, but just haven't been able to hit me deeply enough to go beyond simply enjoying them like I may have from the first three albums. I chalked it up to my station in life and had figured that I wouldn't have that attachment again, but here we are.

At first blush this isn't a good line, but I find myself liking it more and more, I guess for it's obvious awkwardness. And Ed's delivery in Getaway can save just about any lyric anyway.

I kind of think he's deliberately using casual language there; he's kind of addressing the people he sees as misguided (fundamentalists) with their own colloquialisms.

I got on board in 1991 and I don't expect 50 year old men to be writing the songs they did when they were in their mid 20's. I personally think Ed has always been genuine and right now in his life he is writing about what he feels is important and what he is feeling inside, just like he did when he was a 26 year old. Follow Pearl Jam records and you are basically following the path of Eddie Vedder's life in my opinion. How sad it would be if a 50 year old man were still singing seriously about people copying his corduroy jacket style.
I'm enjoying the new songs, so I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. It would suck to not like them, I feel for the fans who do not but maybe next album will be the one they love!
