I just fucking love this album. I have a few friends that I once got to share in the excitement and wonder of pearl jam. Concerns, albums, all the things.

They have moved on from Rock music in general so i dont think they even care to listen to this album and that makes me sad.

But, life goes on.

I have RM.

I love it too, man. So much. And it came at the perfect time.

We got it guys! This is what we've been hoping for, for years! I told myself this wasn't possible, but here we are and Pearl Jam is perfecting past musical ideas and expanding what their capable of.

Sadly, my three closest PJ friends (toured all over the country with one of them) have turned into conservative talk radio listeners and have either lost their musical hearts or are just brainwashed that anything from left can't be good. I'm working on one of them really hard right now and I think he will come around, but it still makes me sad for them, and for me. Glad I get to read all of RM's excitement. Keep posting!

A couple of things to do discuss:

I finally got the vinyl order, such a fun experience opening it up with my kids. They loved seeing the package get unwrapped and sat and listened with me for awhile.

Retrograde showed the biggest leap in quality when I listened on vinyl. No explanation why, but the layers of the song came through and the emotional lift really worked.

Buckle Up .... weirdo PJ tune .... Stone are you okay? Need someone to talk to? This is some kind of a sadistic song. Could've been written for the movie Joker. What the fuck? Somebody go check on Stone, dude is kinda demented. Have we talked about this?

Comes Then Goes .... again, brilliance ... there are tears inside me that haven't been released ... yet.

The recent Josh Evans interview substantiated my theory into reality - the band over the last few records would take a song and rework it, make it more efficient and propulsive whereas on Gigaton they left the original inspiration of the songs in tact. It's just a choice. I thought they more than nailed it on Backspacer. But .. again .. they worked hard on those records and took a fine tooth comb to make them efficient songs. Gigaton is loose.

I feel like I'm still getting used to the first 2 tracks. Coming off of Lightning Bolt, where the first 2 tracks absolutely floored me from the first listens, these 2 kinda challenge me. There's not always an easy thing to latch onto, so in that sense it does serve as a setup for the album.

My CD came today and I'm listening on headphones now -- no question this album is an overwhelmingly more impactful experience when you're listening to it in an uncompromised format. I'm up through "Take the Long Way" and even the lesser songs are really packing a wallop.

If I may ask, did you order your CD through the 10C? I ordered the vinyl and CD through 10C. My vinyl arrived on Saturday but my CD is still a no show. Was wondering if I should start to worry.

I echo most everyone's positive sentiments on the album after listening through the weekend, hoping to post something more substantial by tmrw.

No, I ordered from Amazon -- I've had pretty bad luck ordering from 10C, probably half my orders from them have been bungled in some way. An email to customer service probably couldn't hurt.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Gigaton. The music is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of music theory most of the songs will go over a typical listeners head. There's also Matt’s nihilistic drums, which is deftly woven into his beats - his personal rhythm draws heavily from 70s UK ska, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these songs, to realise that they're not just catchy - they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Gigaton truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the majesty in Eddie’s existential proclamation "Positve...positive! Positive!," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Eddie Vedder’s genius wit unfolds itself into their ears. What fools.. how I pity them.
