McConnell could decide not to have a trial at all.

If there is a trial, then he's the one that can decide on which witnesses (if any) are called. Really the scope of the trial, and rules for calling, examining and cross-examining witnesses, are really up to McConnell.

An unpopular Democrat with dire re-election hopes in a red district switches parties in exchange for presidential re-election assistance. Surely evidence of a collapsing party.

Democrats are expecting Van Drew to switch parties after an internal poll he conducted showed he was unlikely to win re-election in his congressional district, which Trump won by about five points in 2016.

The Target Smart poll, which was conducted earlier this month of likely primary voters in the second district, showed 60% of people surveyed said that "someone new" should be elected, while 24 % said that Van Drew "deserves to be re-elected."

Van Drew has had conversations with senior White House advisers about getting the president's support for his switch, and could announce his plans next week, according to media reports. Van Drew did not immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment

Van Drew attempted to get the district’s Democratic county chairs to sign a letter of support for him, but many refused, and Atlantic County Democratic Chairman Michael Suleiman sent him a letter of warning. This comes as several Democrats are mulling challenges to Van Drew.

The noticeable drop-off in establishment support comes just after “Team Van Drew” lost all three of its legislative seats in the 1st District.
