Gigaton (I think) has done most of the growing on me its going to do, so I've waited til now to post my thoughts.(I'm pretty sure I loved backspacer and even most of LB when they came out.
)
I generally find it easier to post negative stuff about music and whats wrong with it, rather than whats good about it, so apologies if I'm a bit negative, A lot of people are really enjoying this album which is awesome. I want to mention first that I'm generally pleased with Gigaton, as I wasn't expecting anything better than lightning bolt. This album really works because of the times, BTW.
PRODUCTION
The production and sound of Gigaton overall is impressive and I'm really glad they used josh evans. Although, IMO on certain tracks the drums and vocals really come through too thick and powerful and leave guitar textures hidden in the background. Some guitar parts in certain songs chime in and out without much effect due to the big drum sound. Unless mike is doing a stereotypical solo, its hard to tell where mike/stone is in a lot of these songs. and there was potential there with how open this record sounds. I will note that Jeff's Bass parts sound great in the mix, which is the biggest improvement over recent albums
I enjoy every one of these songs to some extent, Ranking and notes below.
DOTC - A new PJ era, disappointing there wasn't too many more surprises like this
Take The Long Way - Cavedweller done well.
SBWM - Im unexpectedly enjoying this now, even though it gives me backspacer vibes. Either the rest of the album could grow on me more like this has, or this has initially tricked me like Backspacer did.
Buckle Up - really unique, and fun to listen for intricacies, even ifs its a moonlander bside and stone is trolling the band.
Alright - I love it right now, (because of the times)
7oclock - still growing. some great parts, not sure about "mushtobeduhn"
Who ever said - good, some sections are better than others
quick escape - not enjoying this as much as others, cool to hear them heavier again, but i dont think this has that much replay value.
never destination - fun to run to. I get ACDC lite (not MFC)
comes then goes - impressive acoustic guitar sound. I get "parting ways" with lyrics i dont care to decode. not what I want at this stage in the album
River cross - i like the floaty bassline. i think the band could have taken this song to the next level, rather than let it sound like ed and friends.
Retrograde is the closest to a failure as has that Lightning bolt connection.
Overall 6.5 to 7 /10. depending on my mood.
