Backspacer just turns my stomach, almost right from the start. GSMF is a good garage rocker that I enjoy listening to, but after this it all goes to shit for me. I don't need to get into detail as it has all been exhausted on this board and others before since my complaints are the typical ones regarding lame lyrics, poor production/mixing/mastering, uninspiring musicianship, etc.
I guess my point is that without diving into details and trying to describe why, I just get an amazing feeling from Yield that I don't get from any other album by any other artist. If I'm in a good mood, it multiplies that good mood. If I'm down, it consoles me... I never have any desire to listen to Backspacer whatsoever.

I'm not sure which is more sad, being into PJ's current material, or getting really excited when they open 'the vault' because they might give you something which sounds like old PJ.

Why no love for Speed of Sound?? Its got some of Eds best lyrics...UK, JG, and SOS are better than In Hiding and Yield is my favorite PJ album....I just never liked IH, it seems repetitive for some reason...its not a bad song but def a low point on a otherwise great/almost perfect album

I was gonna say that Ed sounded closer to 06 than 04 (especially on CC) but i can't recall how ed sounded in 04 exactly. Still It's a lot rougher on these songs than in 03, it was still fairly smooth sounding if benaroya is anything to go by. Could just be singing differently though.
CC is different by design but even on LiR, Ed sounds very 04. That wasn't his best year vocally. Sounds quite rough on some of the VFC performances too. He sounded much better on the 06 tour. 03 tour was ok. Benaroya is an acoustic album, hence more vocal centric. He gave that more effort.

And yes, I like Speed of Sound on the album. FoN is my favourite off Backspacer. I just don't get the hate. It's the most engaging song they've done in years. Virtually every song is a 3.5 or 4 star song for me. PJ fans can be difficult. I bet you're thinking the same about me
You should listen to All those Yesterdays again, on repeat, the lyrics arent that great but eds vocal delivery is money and the song is full of nuances...something thats lacking on BS....and musically Yield shiits all over BS....
