This looks cheap in all the wrong ways, and not sure why they seem to be adhering so closely to the original instead of going for something with its own vibe.

The Pine Barrens episode goes to exactly the right place. Without weird episodes like that in the early seasons, the show never could have gotten to the amazing places it went in seasons five and six(es).
