As a refresher I listened to it again last night. Apart from the overall guitar work and te prechorus, in hiding is meh. I would take ATW and JB over it.

Same advice for you. I don't think I am as flabbergasted at your opinion of In Hiding (I can somewhat understand why you would think "meh") as I am at your liking for JB. At least In Hiding has great guitar work and a great pre-chorus as you said. WTF does JB have?

JB is a really nice song. I don't know how you can compare it to In Hiding except to say you like one and hate the other. It's pretty meaningless to say it completely sucks and there's nothing going for it; that's simply not true, even if you personally hate it.

I love the sentiment of the song. I really enjoy the lyrics ( they do cross into the cheese at times though). I do like Eds guitar work and Jeffs bass playing is quite enjoyable. I find the production a little over the top but it is a beautiful song. They are both very different songs with very different sounds and I'm not prepared or care to really try to make an apples to apples comparison.

In Hiding is one of the better songs on Yield, so I think it'd be flying pretty high over any song on Backspacer.

Different strokes I guess.

It's not really any more cheesy than 'Alive', it's just a different type of cheese.

Much of JB is decent, but that chorus is adult contemporary shlock. Was that BoB's fault?

Fair enough regarding the sentiment.

It's his fault that that bridge became a chorus, yep.

To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised to hear that MYM received some fixin' as well. I can't think of any other reason they'd have chosen not to repeat the intro somewhere in the middle, or to repeat that 'chorus' that I think sounds suspiciously like a bridge. I can hear BO'B in my mind saying 'Keep it more streamlined, cut the fat' and other meaningless sound technician tropes.

I don't think the problem with Just Breathe is that the bridge is a chorus, or whatever it is. It doesn't help, but I think there's other issues with the song independent of that.

which part of MYM do you call the chorus?

Lyrics, melody, the overabundance of syrup, etc. I don't know if it's easy to pick out exactly what's wrong with it and define it. I just don't think the elements that are there just don't really add up to something particularly compelling.

'Self-realised and metaphysically redeemed...' is the chorus as it appears twice (I think).

10 yrs ago they would've foregone the whole syrupy chorus section.

I don't think it's worse than Parachutes in terms of Syrup. Hell, I don't even think it's worse than Thin Air in terms of syrup. This band aren't strangers to cheesy sentimental songs.
