Ricky Ramone lost his job as a stagehand of 17 years after this.
Without really knowing the circumstances, Ed's a fucking douche.
How people treat service/retail workers is a pretty good indication of the kind of people they are.
This has been talked about to death, but the upshot is that Ricky was rumored to have been struggling with addiction for a while, and that his work for the band had been suffering for a while too. Fer chrissakes, they're titans of the performing arts industry; handing the lead singer a de-tuned guitar on their new, emotional track is pretty fucking amateur. Of all the things about Ed that are grating to me these days, this was not one of them.
So it's ok to treat him like subhuman trash in front of thousands of people
You really think it was that bad? He dropped the guitar so he had to pick it up in front of thousands of people. Certainly not polite, and definitely passive-aggressive and crappy, but not what I'd called "sub-human trash." Ed's dickishness in that moment is canceled out by Ramone's incompetence (if the rumors are to be believed), in my mind.
There is no chance that guitar wouldn't have ended up around that millionaire douchebag's head if he did that shit to me

Collective Soul singer goes off on a fan for repeatedly asking "Where's Ross?!" Um, he got kicked out of the band like 15 years ago for having an affair with the singer's wife?
"You want to know where Ross is? He's playing in a karaoke bar in south Atlanta because he's a PIECE OF SHIT. JESUS CHRIST."

Yeah, me neither.
Why don't you guys like it?
It's not really funny. I like on-stage outbursts that are funny. Also this one wasn't on a stage!

WMAs at a Luke Bryan concert are probably way too prideful and freedom loving to sue for getting slapped.
