Is Mookie pronounced with an oooh sound? If so, why isn’t it pronounced like cookie or Wookiee?

Cookie is pronounced ku kee
Wookiee is pronounced wu kee
but Mookie is pronounced mü kee ??
I know it's a dumb and pointless question, but I don't think it deserves a WTF!

Are you saying it mu kee? B/c my wife did that, and I was like, “What the fuck did you just say?”

So it’s like a hundred other inconsistencies in the English language. Except Mookie is a name. Let’s respect that. He wore #10.

Casting a vote for "Moo-key" here. I was born in Tulsa, parents and family are OU fans, so I was aware of the college basketball player Mookie Blaylock before Pearl Jam was even a band.

I'm still not sure how this is different! Is this about which syllable is emphasized?

Wait I think I get it now. Maybe I've been mispronouncing cookie this whole time

When you guys say the word "cookie", does the "cook" sound closer to "cuck"?
I pronounce it closer to how the Cookie Monster pronounces it

Pronounced like "cooking." So yeah closer to "cuck," I guess, but not quite. Hard to type out phonetically.

English is a pretty whack language
there are tons of exceptions to every rule
it's basically a bunch of one-offs you have to memorize
