It may be sacrilegious to say, but I think I like this album more than "Dopesmoker."

I'll check this out, but the explicitly stoner aspect of Sleep (and other droney metal) really turns me off. It seems so juvenile, like writing whole albums about beer.

I have no idea if I'm interpreting this album correctly, but the tone of the lyrics (really, what I've heard from the genre as a whole) feel completely tongue-in-cheek to me. Take that lyric I posted at the bottom of the previous page. Completely ridiculous imagery that still somehow kicks your ass with the metal-ness of it. It would be cringe-worthy if the riffs weren't really, really good and the band wasn't 100% committed to the schtick.
Again, I could be totally misinterpreting this music and if what I'm typing discredits the authenticity of anyone's experience with stoner metal I apologize.

I get that it's self-aware, that doesn't make it any more palatable (much less, if anything.)

But the riffs, man. The riffs.

I would think someone who's into MBV and Swervedriver (shoegaze) and Sabbath would have an appreciation for the doom/stoner metal Sleep employs considering it generally mixes the "drone" aspects of former with the overt influences of the latter.

Not sure if people realize they released this single about a month after The Sciences.

One of the best Uber rides of my life was nearly 4am after an especially long night at work. I didn’t want to talk to anyone and I prayed that my driver would be a quiet one. He had The Sciences on and I acknowledged that I liked it. The only thing he said the whole ride was “have you heard...this?” Then he proceeded to crank up Leagues Beneath. It was a meaningful connection through mutual silence and riffs.

That’s awesome
And I’d have kind of preferred Leagues Beneath to take Sonic Titan’s place on The Sciences only because Sonic Titan was a bonus track on one of the Dopesmoker reissues.

yeah but the studio version of Sonic Titan on the Sciences absolutely slays. the live one was cool but this version is far superior.
I did not know about Leagues Beneath though, thanks for the heads up. They really snuck that one under the radar.

Yep.
It was released originally through Adult Swim's singles series. Who's radar is that on? I didn't even realize Adult Swim was still a thing.
