Other than Pearl Jam, who else is there?

Gotta be one of the cities in the the southern U.S. So many musical styles were birthed down here. Blues, Rock n Roll, RnB, Jazz...

That's a good point...as loose as I was being with definitions I could go with Southeastern USA-ish.

Manchester would have to be up there, surely? But I guess that London trumps that again.

I just got a date for Jazz Fest on Saturday. So for one day at least I will be sure that New Orleans is the best city for music!

What's so great about New Orleans? I know they have a big musical heritage, but I think other places have had a bigger impact and more known names.

I think it's one of those things where if you've spent any amount of time there you'd get it. Not to mention the musical heritage.

If you ask a lot of famous and especially older musicians what the most famous place for music is alot of them might say Greenville, MS. Considered to be the birthplace of the blues.

*edit* As much as I like to hate on my area I gotta admit there are some pretty awesome things about it.

Its not about the big names.

New orleans is great because you can usually wander about the city and happen upon a random great no name band playing in a dive bar, assuming you dont get shot. the variety of genres make it pretty cool too.

Austin is similar, but less chance of getting shot and more chance of finding a really shit band that thinks they are great. But the sheer number of bands in The Live Music Capital of the World makes for a pretty good chance of finding something good. Too bad the austin city council seems hellbent on eradicating their live band culture. some recent new zoning laws and noise restrictions are making things very difficult.

Plus both cities are small and compact enough to drunkenly roam from one bar band to another.

I'm sure New York is awesome just on sheer selection alone.

and the rest of the world or whatever...

Yeah, that's the first band we throw out there in this debate. Forget about RATM, RHCP, Doors, Byrds, Eagles, Tool, Social D, Zappa, Gram Parsons, Dick Dale, NWA, Snoop, among many others

I don't really know, I don't tend to sort music into city 'scenes', but if there's one scene I want to investigate before I die it's in Reykjavik.
