I've found that the best to find that crucial balance between ambiance and hip when it comes to picking dining room music for a restaurant with a clientele as varied as mine is to look to the Beastie's massive sample list and create a pandora station based on that. A Curtis Mayfield station, when curated with care, goes a long way to complement that cheese plate, pork belly, and Old Fashioned trio you have on your table.

I was on RM, and I made a thread about it. It was my most-commented-on thread on the Old RM, I think, which is sad.

I was at work. My boss and I were the only ones who cared.

Lots of BBoys talk in the "bad ass songs" thread, got me thinking I need to revisit. I always love some Beastie tunes in the Spring and Summer. I remember when I first hear Ill Communication in it's entirety back in '97 (I wasn't that into them in '94), and I thought it was the coolest album I'd ever heard. In some ways I still do. It's the perfect mix of all the things they do right. I was pretty down on them with 'The Mix Up' and 'TT5B' (those are like Backspacer and Avocado / LB for me), but 'Hot Sauce' was indeed pretty damn hot. "Nonstop Disco Powerpack" is one of the best songs they've ever made.

Beastie Boys are definitely awesome summer listening. They were the go-to stuff for me (especially the Paul's Boutique through Ill Communication period) when it came to planning summer parties; listening to "Sure Shot" brings back memories of drinking in my parents' cottage's garage with my friends in the wood and trying to have fun while also not being so loud that the neighbors complain.

The BB's most satisfying album since Ill Communication, Hot Sauce sits comfortably alongside their best work.
