It just looks like a shitty movie, stip.

Here's how I imagine this whole thing happened: somebody, somewhere, reeaallly wished they'd been the ones to grab the rights to Hunger Games and make all that sweet, sweet green. It just bothered them beyond all measure. You could even say it haunted their dreams.

And then, as they sat upon the toilet having a think one day, they suddenly remembered another adolescent-level science fiction story with the word "games" in it that they'd had to repeatedly lie about having read in the 1980's.

"Oh," this presumed god among men blurted out, leaping prematurely off the porcelain in his glee. "Money and stuff!" And, faster than a lonely woman who just learned that James Deen is holding open casting, he rushed to the phone with no pants on.

From there it was a simple matter of propping Harrison Ford up to mumble-bumble his way through some lines, convincing Ben "apparently I'll do anything, these days" Kingsley to make drama faces with make-up on, finding a child actor who was neither talentless nor recognizable enough to substantially effect his per diem, and aping other movies' designs, special effects and soundtracks so that everything felt familiar and safe enough not to confuse audiences.

I assume that countless other small decisions were made ("Do we need to change the ending to support a sequel?" "It already has a sequel." "But does it indicate that in the book? People are sheep, and we need to start the sequel buzz RIGHT NOW."), and I assume that all of them were hilarious. But, sadly, the comedy that is the making of a film like this goes virtually uncaptured, and instead all we're left with is...

Card's just a vehement homophobic that donates to homophobic causes. He may also be a racist.
I don't really care about his beliefs or that he might make money off the movie.
What bothers me if that if I go see this or rent it, any money he does make will be donated to causes which I oppose.

Nah, that's not true. There have been efforts to turn this into a movie for a couple of decades.

Is this about how the earth got destroyed and turned into the 13 districts?

I've heard one guy I trust say this was awful and another say it was great.
Then I got the book and I'm not sure I can read it knowing about Card's whole thing.
I did download it for free though.

kind of off-topic, but Card's religious views, his desire to weave them into his stories, and his leaning towards preaching at times within the author's commentary parts of his books (at the end) are ultimately what turned me off of his books completely- I own most of them but doubt I'll be able to go back to read them again anytime soon, and I've had most of them for years...

Ender's Game just doesn't seem like it's been transferred well from novel to screen btw.

In all seriousness, nothing about that really disagrees with what I wrote. The only difference is that other people had tried to make it and failed to get enough studio interest, but then magically after some tweeny Games-fi movies made a gajillion dollars suddenly people "found" a reason to fund the project.

Pritzker and Hendee admit that there's no Ender's Game movie without Harry Potter or The Hunger Games, another Summit/Lionsgate property.

Yeah I don't normally feel the need to agree with someone to enjoy his or her art for example I'll still watch a Mel Gibson movie but for some reason this guy bothers me. Maybe it was because I loved his books so much as a kid (even though I picked up on the religious subtext and moralizing it mostly went over my head) and he turned out to be such a douche it was a turn off. Either that or I just outgrew his books.

How weird it is to remember that there was a time when we didn't have almost every possible piece of information we could ever want to know at our fingertips. It really hasn't been that long, either, since the days when if you wanted to know something you'd have to go to a library and try and search. This thing just started to really become powerful in the last 13 years...Now, I can hardly imagine life without it.

I was watching a video on PJ Chat from the Vs tour and I was thinking why the hell didn't I see them then and then I realized I would have had no way of knowing their tour schedule or when tickets would go on sale or how to buy them back then. They were the biggest band in the world. Now I could get tickets to a local band in Zürich that sold 1O CDs in 10 seconds and take it totally for granted. Of course now I have to get to Zürich.

Nothing about that trailer made me want to see it (and this post cemented that). I was just curious what the controversy was.


David Sim wrote the comic series cerebus the aardvark, which, for a number of years, was fantastic political and social satire. And then the author turned into a raging mysoginist and his books just became unreadable.

I'm three chapters in and really enjoying it.

I read somewhere that he wasn't taking any of the profits from the movie, if that eases your mind or whatever.

Seeing this movie is still like donating to the Let's Make More Shitty Movies foundation, which is just about as offensive as whatever bigot bullshit the author is about.

I'm not sure about the racist thing, but yeah.

Normally, I try to separate art from artist. There are plenty of artists I enjoy that are terrible people with stupid ideas. Which is why I still have no problem reading the series and why I still have no problem admitting how much I love Ender's Game and Speaker for the Dead and Xenocide. Like you said, the issue here for me is the money. I don't want to give him money or support him when I know that money goes directly to poison.

It's really a great book. Glad you're able to enjoy even knowing a bit more about Card's views. I didn't when I first read the original three books. So I didn't have to deal with all of that until much later.
