back to this OP though - it's an intriguing thought but it's tough to simulate bc i just feel like there's no chance anyone other than Ed's pick would have made it in ... because the circumstances that led up to this had essentially everything to do with personal politics / Ed's powergrab and little to do with music ... ergo the option wasn't really open for anyone other than PJ's new emperor

I don't understand why Ed getting the most say circa 1994 is a problem and/or surprise. He was arguably the most recognizable frontman in rock at that point and was getting most of the white-hot attention and was coming into his own as a singer/songwriter. Who was gonna pick the drummer? Mike?

Not a surprise, but not necessary, and probably not for the best. It’s a common issue for bands though.

I think it was a surprised to both stone and jeff to see Ed taking the leader position in a way. But they were pretty happy with Jack too.

Matt was the star of the show when I saw him with SG for the first time in 2011. I agree with what Ben said about touring with NIN that year, it seemed like most people there where there for NIN and had no interest in Soundgarden.

I took Ben's comments maybe more in the line of that tour itself. Cameron self-admitted to seeing himself as the "musical director" of Soundgarden - I wondered if it was almost like not having Dad around.

And, honestly, everything Ben said could be true and yet Cameron still be the better fit for Soundgarden. His style is so unique and iconic. But I can easily see that it could be annoying to play with, especially if he's free to do whatever.

I never noticed anytime that Cameron's improvising sent things off when I saw SG live - but it did catch me when re-watching the SNL '96 performances (which, to be fair, seemed massively under-rehearsed, if anything). Cameron makes a few bizarre choices, especially during "Pretty Noose" - they throw the pace and don't really add anything. (Admittedly, Shepherd also fucks up sideways here.)




Also: Chamberlain for PJ.

One thing though - would another drummer even be possible now? I agree that it probably should have been Cameron:Soundgarden::Chamberlain:PJ in 2014, but damned if anyone could learn enough PJ songs for the band to maintain the expectation of varied setlists. For SG, Chamberlain really only had to learn 20 songs, if that - can you imagine anything as few as 30 or 40 on a PJ tour?

What always suprises me is that Dave A never found a permanent position elsewhere.
He was fired from the biggest band in the world. He was living Seattle, how come we have never seen him in any wellknown band?

What about contemparies? The Pumpkins were looking for a drummer in '97. But he was not considered. Dave Grohl was looking for one in '95/'96. Perry Farrel had a couple of projects. He had one session with Axl Rose, but Slash and Duff also had a couple of projects. Ministry had a different drummer every 3 years, and he befriended them at Lolla '92.

Other heavy Seattle bands like: 'Heart', or 'Queensryche', or any other band? Or any post grunge band? He had starpower, had was an excellent drummer.

He started his own band 'Green Romance Orchestra' in '95 orso. But they did not play much. He did some sessions work lately for Shawn Smith and Peter Cornell (Chris's brother). The last couple of years he played with Stevie Salas for a bit, but that's it!

I mean Dave Krusen is still touring the world with 'Candlebox'. First in 1998 and now for the last couple of years more permanently.
