I love the film, i love the sequel with eddie furlong too. Both of them are so fucking out there, violent and fuckin campy, i just adore them.
The first one has horrible moments, Gage's death, Zelda, Gage cutting the old man....fuck its too heavy.

The new trailer seems to suggest they're just going the undead horror route.

The true horror in the book was the fact that Louis Creed actually went through with the insane idea of digging up his dead child and burying him at the micmac burial grounds. The supernatural parts were creepy, but I felt the more realistic portions were more disturbing.
