I have no feelings about the original and don't particularly care for the other versions, but that cover is one of my all time favorite cover performances by them

"Know Your Rights" was like an air raid siren going off--just this manic, urgent warning of impending mayhem. It felt poignant and relevant to the anti-war assembly type vibe many of the '03 shows seemed to be trying to generate. I usually skip both songs on bootlegs, and wouldn't want to see them reappear necessarily, but I thought they served their purpose at the time.

Actually, come to think of it, I did see "Fortunate Son" a second time, on the Vote for Change tour. It had definitely worn its welcome by then, especially with all the covers that were already taking up space in those typically relatively short sets.

The first time I saw it I was with a few friends who got really excited by it, so that probably added to it. A lot of my friends through college were pretty familiar with PJ's output but didn't keep up with bootlegs, etc., so it caught them totally off guard when they played something like "Fortunate Son" or "Baba O'Riley."

The energy at that Champaign show was just off the charts, though, so they probably could have actually done "Together Forever" and I would have been ecstatic.

Sleater-Kinney actually cover Fortunate Son WAY better than PJ ever did with or without SK.
PJ played it too slow, SK bumps it up a bit and Janet pounds the hell out of it.


Arms Aloft and Public Image are probably my 2 least fav songs they have covered.

Id still love to hear them do 5 to 1 by the doors though.

public image was pretty weak but I liked arms aloft fine. It won't make my short list of favorite pearl jam covers, but it was enjoyable.

Yeah, see, I loved Arms Aloft. Maybe because I wasn't familiar with the original at the time. But it's a great song. And Pearl Jam's version is nice. It would rank pretty high on my PJ covers list, I think.

I think any cover that makes Eddie jump to his high range is not a good choice nowadays. And I agree, 2003 was an abomination of a year for covers.

I was just thinking how funny it would be for Mike to tear into that opening riff from Down by 311 and see how the crowd reacts.

The cover I personally cannot stand of "somewhat recent" covers is Kick out the Jams. I just cannot get into it for whatever reason. Maybe in person it sounds and comes off better, but on the boots - ugh.
The one cover I hope they lay to rest this tour (though I doubt they will) is Baba. While I somewhat enjoy it, it's just lost the luster of how cool it was when I first saw them play it on that Singles release/MTV thing where Ed was so freaking drunk....
