i used to be put tremendous stock in eddie as a lyricist. Since I discovered people like dan bern or tom waits that's much less the case. I still think he is a good rock lyricist, but that's it.

Having said that, there is a lot of pretty strong writing on Backspacer. Force of Nature, Speed of Sound, Amongst the Waves, and Johnny Guitar are all pretty solid lyrically. The Fixer is very good at doing what it sets out to do, and most of the other songs, with the exception of supersonic, have a few memorable lines.

And while Eddie's power as a vocalist has definitely decline I think he writes much better melodies now. And since I was not a huge fan of the neil young influence on albums like No Code (and Yield to a lesser extent), I kinda like where he is now more than any period since the early 90s.

I've put more value into Ed's lyrics than him as a singer. I haven't found his lyrics anything but average the past couple of albums, probably since Riot Act. I really think the band has carried this group as of late.
I can't put my finger on why I'm still interested in this band, other than my memories, and the fact that its like an old relationship. I still like what they do sometimes, and occasionally a lot. But generally I can still see reason to hope that they'll make the kind of album I want again, because the majority of their albums (other than two) are my favourite albums ever. I agree that the most disappointing aspect of this band has been Ed's lyrics... I'd say since S/T.

with a few exceptions I think the writing on Backspacer is definitely stronger than Riot Act. Not nearly as good as Binaural, but I think Binaural is in their top 3, lyrics wise.

Force of Nature is the only song I find really interesting lyric wise maybe The End as well.
I think Binaural has some very good lyrics but I think the top of the mountain is No Code.

I suppose over time, it gets very difficult to come up with something impressive lyrically. Myself, I've written lyrics for about 18 songs over a period of 3 and a half yrs for my cousin who is a musician. I find it very hard at times........having many blank moments. Sometimes I come up with something I'm very proud of, than the next time, it's the complete opposite and frustration ensues, and I literally re-pen it in an even simpler form just so I can move on. I can't imagine writing stuff for the amount of yrs he has.

Mods: If someone records the new single off the radio and posts a link to it in this space will you allow it to remain here?

No Code is pretty good, but there is really only two standout tracks (lyrically) for me. Red Mosquito and Hail Hail.

The End has some nice moments, and a lovely melody that elevates the lyrics, but I don't think they are his best work as a piece of stand alone writing. Speed of sound covers some of the same ideas more effectively, imo

I really don't think we'll get the single tomorrow. Radio either for that matter.
It'll be a clip and album title and possibly track list.

IMO Pearl Jam has never been *great* lyrically, but they were very good on Vitalogy, No Code, Yield, Binaural and Riot Act. Other than that, their lyrics are 'just OK' or 'good' to me. They weren't ever terrible until S/T. My esteem for this band plummeted at that point, helped by the fact that I'd never loved Matt Cameron. I can tolerate him, sometimes enjoy his playing enough, but that's it.

Hence why I said that now, what I want is lyrics that don't disappoint and / or embarrass me. If they don't, chances are I'll have something which I'll allow to grow on me.

The writing on Ten is very good. Over the top in a heart on sleeve angsty way, but very good.

Really S/T is the only album where the lyrics are weak. Maybe Vs. but there are still some very well written songs on there. The only great song (lyrically) on S/T is comatose, and it's only like 10 lines long

Didn't we have an announcement last time that they'd play a new song on radio, and then they went like 'Oh LOL sorry we were wrong, we can't play it as we made a mistake and got it too early.' Hope that doesn't happen again.

Ill be perfectly happy with that, though ill be hoping the clip is least 30 or 45 seconds instead of the length of the clip we got for WWS

No album title at least will be a bummer.

And I also don't think Ten has great lyrics, at all. It has catchy and passable lyrics. Its OTT juvenile angst really makes a lot of its lyrics not very good.

get it on, get it on, before it's gone, let's get it on, carry on, get it on, get it on.

...or whatever the eff he attempts to say in that missed opportunity for a really good song.

I enjoy some of the lyrics on Vs. and I think their songwriting matured at that album. I'm in the minority (if it exists) that Glorified G's lyrics are pretty clever.
