Chud's right. When Ten came out no one knew who Pearl Jam was. The single did not get any immediate attention. The calculations involved would have been different from the ones made in subsequent albums. The single is not communicating with an established audience.

So in late 92/early 93 when JEREMY, YL, ALIVE, EF were tearing up the charts, your telling me that is un equatable? Come on. ...

There wasn't a "established audience" in 1992-release of VS? LMFAO. ....THAT'S RICH

They had the biggest audience of fans during this time.

I think you might be missing what this thread is going after. Singles as a first impression. Ten was a slow starter, without a built in audience. The inital singles didn't make much of an impression, and the subsequent singles aren't what this thread is about.

Which is why I did include the vs. single

I understand that you guys are leaving 10 out BUT let's do it this way. Let's USE 10 single just at the point when they became relevant. CANNOT EXCLUDE 10

VS single wasn't released till late 93

In most cases these are not the best songs on their respective albums, but are they indicative of those albums?

Regardless of lack of audience or expectations, doesn't Ten still fit the mold of this exercise? To answer this question, the album has to have been listened to in order to evaluate how the lead single represents that album. This really wasn't a first impressions thread...or was it?
