It's supposed to be 15-20% baseline for sitdown meal, 10% baseline for buffets.
10% for buffets? I must be a dick. I don't tip at the buffet.
If i get my own food and all that is done for me id drink refills and eventually getting the dirty plates out of the way then i feel ok only giving a dollar a person, and if its one where i get my own drinks then i tip nothing.

How about a place like sonic? Its fast food but they bring it out to you. I kinda felt like i shoulda given something the first time i ever went there, so the next time my change was like just under 2 dollars and i told the girl she could keep the change and she didn't seem ok with it

That's where I struggle the most..

In the spots where i dont feel like Ive been waited on. Like picking up a pizza, and there's a tip line on the credit slip.. I feel like if I leave a buck as a nice gesture, it's going to look like I was just cheap. Where as if i dont tip at all, it just looks like I dont consider that a tippable service- because it's not at McDonalds or the Grocery.

Let me guess: Australian service workers get paid a dignified wage?

And somehow those businesses were able to remain operational. Imagine that.

Well, those that haven't gone out of business or been forced to only open restricted hours due to the high cost of wages.

Top Adelaide restaurants staying shut during festive season over high wages

SOME of Adelaide's most popular restaurants and function centres will close their doors on Christmas and New Year's eves because of increased wage costs.

Traders say a State Government decision to create mandatory public holidays after 7pm on the two dates will hurt their businesses by forcing them to pay staff higher penalty rates.

A Sunday Mail survey of businesses across Adelaide found many would now remain closed rather than bear the burden of the costs.

...

Restaurant & Catering SA chief executive Sally Neville said 75 to 80 per cent of businesses she had spoken with would close for the public holidays.
"Businesses feel that to put their prices up enough to cover the cost of those nights will alienate their customers, and they don't what to do that," she said.

Utopia @ Waterfall Gully co-owner Kelly Markos said this year would probably be the last time his award-winning function centre could afford to host one of its popular New Year's Eve weddings.

"We've got a wedding booked for New Year's Eve and it's causing huge issues for us because of the extreme rise in the wages," Mrs Markos said.

"Those nights are really important for us in terms of revenue but when you're looking at $50 or $60 an hour for casual wait staff it's not even worth opening."

Apologies for the mobile link to the article above, I'm on my phone.

It may vary from state to state but generally I think hospitality staff are required to be paid double-time-and-a-half on public holidays (resulting in the absurdity of paying someone $50+ an hour to serve drinks and wait tables.)
