Not sure what triggered it, maybe just feeling especially vulnerable/fucked up, but "House Where Nobody Lives" by Tom Waits absolutely made me cry one day. The part that got to me the most is bolded.
There's a house on my block that's abandoned and cold
The folks moved out of it a long time ago
And they took all their things and they never came back
It looks like it's haunted with the windows all cracked
Everyone calls it the house
The house where nobody lives
Once it held laughter
Once it held dreams, did they throw it away, did they know what it means?
Did someone's heart break
Or did someone do somebody wrong?
Well, the paint is all cracked, it was peeled off of the wood
The papers were stacked on the porch where I stood
And the weeds had grown up just as high as the door
There were birds in the chimney and an old chest of drawers
Looks like no one will ever come back
To the house where nobody lives
Oh, and once it held laughter
Once it held dreams, did they throw it away, did they know what it means?
Did someone's heart break
Or did someone do somebody wrong? So if you find someone
Someone to have, someone to hold, don't trade it for silver
Oh, don't trade it for gold
'Cause I have all of life's treasures and they're fine and they're good
They remind me that houses are just made of wood
What makes a house grand, oh, it ain't the roof or the doors
If there's love in a house, it's a palace for sure
But without love it ain't nothin' but a house
A house where nobody lives
But without love
It ain't nothin' but a house, a house where nobody lives

I saw Clapton once, but I was so high I don't remember any of it. I remember the next day all my friends being mad that he only played songs from "From the Cradle" (it was that tour) and not any hits. So I guess I didn't miss anything. That night may have been the highest I've ever been from pot. Fuckin' 90's man

So you’re seriously telling me Clapton isn’t a great guitar player?

He can be a great guitar player and still be overrated as an artist overall. You can be awesome at guitar but still have shitty songs.

He's fine. There are far more interesting players out there.

I don't like Clapton very much but I love the version of "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out" on the MTV Unplugged.

Clapton is a fantastic guitarist plagued with a sterile, generic sound. I'll pass on almost all Clapton except Cream.

And so is love
God is inside you
All around you

Glowing, showing
You the way
That's the stuff. You're really on a Sturgill bender, eh?
I'm on a Sturgill bender but that lyric just happens to fit this thread for me. Not many do. Particularly the bolded part...I think about my kids every time and the beauty of it all that's captured in those few lines...life, death, children, parents, love. Beautiful.

Honestly, I've never found Clapton's guitar playing that great -- I mean, he's clearly talented, in the same way that all those blues-inspired rock guitar legends can recite their various grab bags of licks and obligatory guitar master gimmicks, but I can't think of a single instance where I've felt moved by anything he's played.
That version of "Nobody Knows You" is just a really nice, lovely ensemble performance of a beautiful song -- it really has nothing to do with Clapton, there honestly could be any competent singer at the helm of it and I'd still like it.
