Born in 1996. Most of the kids my age know them as "that grunge band that wrote Even Flow and Jeremy." My dad and cousin were big fans and they introduced me to the band. Before that I only knew the radio songs. (Even Flow, Jeremy, Daughter, Better Man.)

They are respected, I guess. But its hard to find someone who is a big fan.
They mostly know the famous ones like, Even Flow, Black, Alive and Last Kiss.
But Just Breathe has pretty huge here.

isn't just knowing the radio songs/hits the level of familiarity that most non fans have with a band?

Yeah. I guess what I was trying to say was that they (people my age) don't show too much familiarity or interest in the band.

I work with a girl who is 24 and thinks it's absurd that I listen to Pearl Jam. Thing is, we have really similar tastes in music beyond that. She loves Tom Waits, The Mynabirds, Dylan, The Beatles, The Frames, Fiona Apple, etc. But she laughs me out of the room when I talk about Pearl Jam.

I was talking to one of the girl's who makes my coffee a few weeks ago, she's 21. She mentioned how she was listening to Coldplay for "the first time in forever" and how she forgot how great they were. I laughed and said I hated Coldplay. Her reply was "whatever, you probably listen to Pearl Jam".

I don't know what you guys are talking about. That video of those Israeli teenagers singing Alive makes it pretty clear that Pearl Jam are still hip with kids.

I very much get the same impression, which is probably why it would normally take considerable effort to pry the fact that I like Pearl Jam out of me. It's just kind of embarrassing.

I think they tend to be regarded as the quintessential 'boring dork who hasn't bought an album in 20 years' band. I can't even think of any other band to which that stigma applies, Pearl Jam really are in a cringe-worthy class of their own among music fans.

But I wear that shit like a badge of honor. Pearl Jam have meant the world to me. They are a part of my growing up, of being who I am. And I really don't give a shit who knows it.

I've found there's invariably a whole host of unwelcome associations that become attached to you as a result of admitting a fondness for Pearl Jam. It's easier to just avoid the subject.

My last post was a total joke. But it got me thinking. It's probably stuff like "jamily" that makes non-fans hate Pearl Jam so much.
