A shame.

the only songs I've every really enjoyed by the Beach Boys are the ballad type ones.

The surf songs are fun but only in very small doses. And i just don't get the love for Pet Sounds

what do you recommend for a fan of:
God Only Knows
Surfer Girl
In My Room

Surf’s Up is *maybe* the only ballad to best God Only Knows. The bootleg version is better because it doesn’t have the “Child is father to the man” refrain at the end, but...
cool, i think i like that one. will go listen
Any other songs with that general vibe?

“Plus three more great new songs written by Brian Wilson.”

They couldn’t have just put three song titles there in place of all that?

My knowledge of the Beach Boys’ music extends pretty much only to their hits. I did hear a tune of theirs a few months back that was kinda dark and in a minor key. Can’t remember the name of it at all, but I liked it way more than all their hits.

Music theory isn't my jam, so I couldn't tell you what songs are in a minor key. Though a cursory search found that apparently Brian Wilson didn't write too many songs in a minor key.

However, Til I Die is a dark and excellent song that has been mentioned a few times in this thread.

There is an alternate version with an instrumental intro. Some prefer this one, but I prefer the album version.

If it was that song, and I honestly can’t remember if it was or wasn’t, it would’ve been that second one. It was the instrumentation that initially drew me to the song.

Sloop John B is probably my favorite Beach Boys song. And it isn't even a Beach Boys song really. But still, their version of it is great.

The poor cook he caught the fits
And threw away all my grits
And then he took and he ate up all of my corn
Let me go home
Why don't they let me go home
This is the worst trip I've ever been on

The above is peak lyrical songwriting. It just doesn't get any better.

Let's show Mike Love some...respect. He gets deservedly shit on, but this unreleased version of Big Sur is great.

I've been exploring their music some after enjoying the Love and Mercy movie quite a bit. I think I get why Pet Sounds is so adored, along with a lot of their other stuff, but ultimately it just isn't my bag. Other than God Only Knows. Fucking love that song. But the feeling I get from most of their music, and then even more so when watching live performances, is these guys are profoundly "lame dad dancing at wedding" uncool, personality-wise. And it's just not a feeling I can get past when trying to enjoy a lot of their music, with some big exceptions. That Mike Love guy especially turns me off.
