I am not upset about it at all but I will say this: it was a bit of a sloppy recreation - they pulled it off much better with the Ten show and the Vs. show - but hey, No Code is a real great album so I can’t complain.

Would have been cooler if they released the No Code show at the Showbox before the album came out. Though, im sure they didnt record it.

it is rather infuriating that pearl jam seemingly lacked the foresight enough to record fucking everything. How can neil young have pristine recordings from the 60's and 70's of some of his most beloved shows yet pearl jam couldnt even completely capture their first appearance at soldier field?

This, or just about any show from that tour would suffice. It’s the only tour they’ve yet to release a show from.

Apt though I am to perk up any time a show I attended receives some kind of special attention, this seems random and pointless -- the existing bootleg already sounds great. If I was into vinyl it would be cool have, though.

Josh Evans doesn't have 25 years of multi-platinum records under his belt like Brendan; I wonder if having him remix these shows isn't partially a gesture by the band to support him with some extra work during a tough time. That said, seems like he could have just as easily worked on a show they haven't already released...

In any case, my expectations for this series have been dead for a long time. I more or less assume I'm just not going to buy what they release, and then enjoy being pleasantly surprised on occasion.

I feel this has been discussed over the years and mentioned here but it is not a lack of foresight but simply wasn't practical.

We need Vault shows from the No Code tour. Any Jack show will do actually...

Since 2000 the following shows have NOT been released in the official bootleg program

Santa Barbara '03.
Shows from VFC tour '04
House of Blues '05
Astoria - UK '06.
Whole tour from '07.
Alpine Valley '11.
Philadelhia '12

All worthy of a Vault release, all would have been a better choice than Moline

The choices for Vault releases are sometimes weird. Don't get me wrong, I've listened to this show a couple of times and it's great but it's still available on CD or digital download from the store and it's a fairly recent show. It doesn't scream 'Vault' to me, just because they played an album in full.

As this is the 'No Code' show, does this imply they have nothing from '96 to actually release? Do they not have Berlin '96 tapes that they can mix/master for release?

PJ were pioneers when it came to releasing the official shows starting in 2000, but the way they've managed the pre-2000 years is puzzling and slightly frustrating. We know they only recorded certain shows in 1998 due to the cost of recording in specific venues, but we know next to nothing about other years. Is this also the case for 1994-1996?

I'm grateful that the Dylan camp has a good handle on Bob's archives. The Bootleg Series are what other artists/bands should strive for. Neil Young Archives are vast but it's a bit of a mess and he's been hyping stuff up for so long without delivering that it gets frustrating.

While I'm sure I've made more than my share of snarky comments about PJ's Vault series, which has a few excellent entries but on the whole has been pretty disappointing, I think I've more or less accepted that this series isn't going to become something that's exciting to me and at this point am just happy to take the good ones when they come and happier to save the money on the rest. There is so much live PJ out there already -- countless shows from 2000 and beyond, and between official releases and high quality bootlegs, probably as much pre-2000 as is reasonable to expect. I'm still holding out hope that we'll get a 1996 or March 1998 show someday, but for as often as I listen to PJ nowadays, Berlin '96 and Melbourne '98 scratch the itch when I'm in the mood.

That said, I think a little transparency and goodwill PR would go a long way towards improving the perception of this program. It always feels like there is this contemptuous us vs. them mentality that the PJ organization fosters toward its customer base, like every drip of crap they dole out is manna from heaven and anyone who thinks otherwise is an unworthy ingrate. Compare that to David Lemieux who manages the Grateful Dead's vault, who at the end of the day is superfan #1 and is not only as excited as the fanbase for as much stuff to come out of the vault as possible, but is extremely transparent about his process, why he chooses what he chooses, what they have in the vault to begin with, when new sources come to light, etc. etc. It not only fosters engagement between the listener and the organization, but it tempers expectations -- the fans have some sense of what's on the table for release and what isn't. It just seems like that little bit of human "niceness" goes a long way, y'know?

But in the end -- you know, whatever. As PJ goes, I can live in the 2000 tour until the day I die.
