Now that I've given it a few listens I agree with you. Gone are the days of music that was soulful and could breathe and allowed the listener to absorb the space in a song. No more Present Tenses or Faithfuls or Rivals. Even the claustrophobia of Vitalogy had a kind of menacingly evocative ether than balanced it's aggressiveness. Now everything's compressed, delivered with an entirely unwarranted urgency that subordinates nuance to immediacy.
