IMO, Zimmerman should have been charged with and convicted of manslaughter. But it's Florida so idiocy reigns.
This travesty of trial should be blamed on the media. I wouldn't be surprised if the jury went with 'not guilty' as a way to lash out at the obvious bias in the popular press and the absurd behavior of the judge going directly after Zimmerman towards the end of the trial.

I'd be worried some lunatic would come after me or my family. I always think its strange when the media interview the jurors after the verdict. We should never even see these people's faces, let alone know who they are....

The jury needed to feel beyond a reasonable doubt that he was guilty to convict him. I wasn't in that courtroom, but the updates I was catching on the news made it seem like there was nothing but doubt regarding both sides of the trial. Not-guilty of murder doesn't come as a surprise when the law makes killing another person legal.
This.

From what I can tell the defense was much better than the prosecution in pretty much every way. Pretty sad. Dude should have just stayed in his goddamn car.

There was never a strong case for muder, they should have went with manslaughter from the beginning, but even that would be tough to prove. But it was made even harder in my opinion by the media which I think pushed them to try murder 2 first. Either way, guilty or not guilty, unless this guy moves out of the states, he isn't gonna have much of life in jail or out of it. I do believe while being overzealous crime seeker, he did under florida rule, defend himself.

but how could Zimmerman know he was unarmed? He was wearing a hoodie for Christ's sake!

What's the magic number of fists to the face while you're on your back before you are justified in using deadly force? 10? 20? Just before you lose consciousness?

So you accept Zimmerman's version of events without question? When would you ever do that with another murder suspect?

That's the thing though, you don't have to accept his version "without question." 1% question is enough. His version is plausible, and there is no concrete evidence to contradict it.. so finding him guilty with no actual proof would be nearly as tragic as the shooting itself.

I didn't follow this trial day-by-day or anything, but pretty much everything I read about the evidence presented backed up Zimmerman's version of the events. One particular item that I found very interesting was the testimony by one of the officers that questioned him and, in an effort to figure out whether or not he was telling the truth, told him that there might be security footage showing the incident. Zimmerman's response was apparently a very relieved "thank god", which isn't how you would expect an aggressor to react.
This is a very sad ordeal, and it obviously shouldn't have happened. I also think it is beyond pathetic that this is being turned into some big race-motivated ordeal.

Its possible that he grabbed Martin or otherwise initiated contact, but whatever Zimmerman did he did not land any punches. Maybe everything leading up to him getting pummeled occurred differently, but the pummeling was accepted by the prosecution, if I'm not mistaken. Its clear that at some point he was on his back getting hit in the face. If he short Martin when this was no longer occurring than it would not be justified, but based on all the forensics they were still in this position (Martin straddling Zimmerman) when the shot was fired. I'm saying that if it happened the way he claimed it did, he would be justified. So sure, if you don't believe him it wasn't justified.

and yet you automatically accept the versions that the media threw down your throat that it was just another profiling crime
tell me, who did the prosecutions own witness state used a racial slur?

No, I'm not accepting "the media's version." I'm saying we don't know exactly what happened, and it's really odd to me that people aren't more skeptical of Zimmerman.
I'm pretty much over the verdict, it's just people's reaction to the whole thing that bothers me. Lighting off fireworks, acting like Trayvon instigated it. Like I said, if Zimmerman just stays in his car (which he was told to do), none of this ever happens. It's the definition of senseless.

No question it's senseless.
