Is it? I thought it was a remake. Or maybe it's some kind of alternate universe.epilogue wrote:Yes. This is THE sequel.Strat wrote:wait is this different than the last suicide squad movie that sucked?

Could be. I never saw the first one and I'm not planning on seeing this new one. I thought it was a sequel hiding inside a marketing reboot.BurtReynolds wrote:Is it? I thought it was a remake. Re: James Gunn's THE Suicide Squad (2021)
This definitely clarifies things:
Here's how a WB rep described Gunn's "The Suicide Squad" to us when we asked for clarification: "While there are references to the first movie, it isn't really fair to call it a follow up or a sequel because there really is no through line besides a few repeat characters."
In an interview with The New York Times, director James Gunn said the choices for his film weren't defined by what he saw in 2016's "Suicide Squad."
"I wanted it to be its own thing completely," Gunn said. "When Warner Bros. said they wanted me to do this, I watched the first movie for the first time, and I called them back and said, what do I have to keep from this movie? And they said, nothing."

99% chance there is a joke about Harley Quinn dreaming the first movie.

Understand that there were two separate Suicide Squad comic book runs originally, and this is based on the other one (better one).

It was just one comic book and they kinda had a few of regulars. It changed a lot recently with the inclusion of Harley for example.

Re: James Gunn's THE Suicide Squad (2021)
Hey I really, really liked this. I'm just gonna copy over what I posted elsewhere:
Much to my surprise I actually really liked The Suicide Squad! I super wasn't into the marketing but it won me over almost immediately. None of the trailers really conveyed its odd charms, the weird little detours it took, the artfulness and thoughtfulness of it, the twisted little alleyways and cul de sacs it traverses, the places it chooses to explore. far from the insipid homogeneity that has been plaguing the Capeshit® genre lately. it is messy, it is gaudy, it is extremely violent. it is intensely weird, it has some remarkably janky special effects and several moments of startling loveliness. it never stops showing you new things. and it even wades into some (surface level but welcome) critiques of US interventionism. I dunno, it was just exactly the type of movie I needed tonight, and I found it an utter delight. 8.5/10

Well he based the new movie on the John Ostrander stories in the comic books, another part of the comic book run, than the first one was inspired by.

Re: James Gunn's THE Suicide Squad (2021)
It is technically a sequel but they also set it up so that there's no need to have watched the first one. I think they were pretty clever about it
