Interesting. I thought Ed was the only one that ripped off The Who.

Not sure if this really counts but my brain made the association at least.
Guitar riff in The Police - Driven to Tears and the verse of Big Wave (and outro? especially since the riff is most out there on its own).

And

Big Wave at 2:14

You can learn a lot about a band from the songs they cover.

Like Tool covering Ted Nugent's Stranglehold

Whipping sounds like The Mono Men-Stop Draggin' Me Down

Better Man-Second part sounds like The English Beat-Save It For Later

Corduroy-Intro from New Order-Ceremony

“Down” is the most blatant rip-off Pearl jam has ever recorded. Another reason why it’s one of their worst songs.

It's not fair to call that a 'rip off' in any accepted use of the term, though.

Do we really expect the guys in Pearl Jam sat down, listened to that tune, mocked up their own soundalike and thought "gee, we really got away with that one!"

It's a pretty generic chord progression, I'd be surprised if there's only one commercially-released song with a vague resemblance.

Of course it's not

It's just a funny coincidence

But it's really funny

Yeah I probably used the term “rip off” a bit haphazardly. “Example” would be a better choice.

I was pissed off. Then I watched Para Ti Maria again. Now I’m happy.

I read an article years ago that compared it to Down. Apparently that band is or was pretty big in Portugal.
