I think most bands from the 90’s wouldn't make it 20 years later without MTV or reliance on radio.

No i don't really think so. Ten has a particular "sheen" production wise that you didnt really hear before 1990. I just dont think you could have gotten that sound in the 70s.

I don't know if this fits the thread but I did have to work pretty hard one time to convince someone that the Pixies song on the radio was in fact a song from the eighties and not an indie rock track circa 2012
