Over here this would make you a "shit cunt" (technical term). Our registration covers the compulsory 3rd party insurance scheme that covers any innocent bystanders/pedestrians that may get injured in the event of that vehicle being involved in an accident. If you're car isn't registered then you aren't covered and that poor wanker may well miss out on having their injuries and costs covered.
Oh yeah, and it helps pay for the upkeep and maintenance of the roads that the car itself drives on.

It's funny, 'cause given my qualification above you'd think I would be all about ripping off Kmart, but that is totally not the case.
I dutifully make sure to ring up every single item I take to the self-check out.

I wonder how much a store budgets for stolen merch when installing self checkouts. I suppose the savings in labor offsets it all.

I thought about this thread while passing the "leave no trace" sign at a local trailhead this morning. The idea, if you're unfamiliar, is to be economical in your use of public trails. Part of it is no littering, obviously, but also a big part is just being aware and respectful of the path for others. There's an actual written code to go along with it, but the concept is pretty self explanatory. Don't widen the trail by avoiding puddles when it's muddy. Don't remove flora and fauna along the trail. Stay on the path as intended. Be a steward and a visitor. There's no fine associated with non-compliance, and you're often on these trails alone. How one behaves on a trail is probably a good test of ethics and character.

The solution is to learn the ancient art of relieving oneself in the wild. The classic method is to dig yourself a cathole; instead of burying something 6 feet underground, you’re aiming for at least 6 inches down, no less than 200 feet away from water sources, campsites, and the trail. Prepare your materials – TP (unless you’re using some form of trail bidet – yes, this is a real thing), bagging system (I use a zippable lunch bag to store the used paper and a small opaque bag, stored in an outside pocket of my pack, to squirrel it away), and hand sanitizer. Next, get cozy and cop a deep squat, enjoy the view, and relax into it. Once finished, cover up your deposit with the dirt removed to create the hole (don’t cover it with rocks; you’re not actually a cat), stash used TP in your bagging system (NEVER BURY IT), and sanitize your paws. Congrats – YOU DID IT!!!

I think if you have the means to pay for public transit, you should pay and consider it your donation to the city, but public transit should obviously be free at point of service and there's nothing unethical about hopping a gate if you need to.
