Weakest link in great bands

Outside of Boom, who’s the current weakest link? Matt or Stone?

Matt really has had a wild career arc: From the strongest link in a technically interesting/difficult band to the weakest link in a technically generic/bland band.

Mick Fleetwood, Fleetwood Mac. Nearing the end of the deep dive, I’ve fostered a new respect for John McVie and his bass playing. Fleetwood, however, stays pretty pedestrian throughout the entire career and really offers nothing out of the ordinary.

It’s hard to quantify really because someone who may not be an instrumental powerhouse might be the creative force. Dave Matthews comes to mind. He’s got great guys all around him, plays a good enough rhythm and vocals match the music but it’s sort of Kermit-like. He’s the weakest link in terms of pure musicianship, but obviously a centerpiece creatively.

I thought of Dave, but asked my self what would the band be without him. I arrived at a much different answer than my front men.. I mean anyone almost improves The Peppers or Jane for me.

dave matthews band is an odd case. the front guy is obviously not the most talented musician in the band, and he also plays the guitar like a weirdo. but his weirdo guitar playing is the foundation for the rest of the band to kick ass. he can also pull off most of these song by himself, even if they are much different from when the entire band is with him.

jim morrison is another lead singer i thought of, mostly b/c i love when the doors jam. but he's also one of my favorite singers, so he's out.

I don't think this is entirely unfair... But I also think that a simple, restrained drummer is much harder to come by than most people think

I don’t disagree. But what could’ve been achieved if the drummer could be as unpredictable and experimental as Buckingham became? MF played fine throughout the years, but that’s all it was.
