The last time I had to replace (not upgrade) my phone was maybe 5 or 6 years ago, because it slid out of my coat pocket and down the floor of a moving bus and then slid through the slight crack of the not quite sealed bus door and onto busy traffic... I got out of the bus to find it and it had already been run over by several cars. Accidents happen!
