Do you really want to hear a bunch of bad French accents for three hours?
To be properly accurate I guess they would actually have to speak French.

Huh?
I said these are supposed to be historically accurate movies
Where did you get that idea?
Napoleon is an upcoming epic historical drama film directed and produced by Ridley Scott and written by David Scarpa. It is based on the true story of Napoleon Bonaparte, primarily depicting the French leader's rise to power as well as his relationship with Empress Joséphine.
nothing i read or heard about this movie suggests it's supposed to be an abstract interpretation loosely based on historical events
Where did you read that it was supposed to be "historically accurate"? It's a movie based on a true story, but those are rarely historically accurate in the strictest sense.

I would prefer to hear actual French with subtitles, yes. I personally do not need big american movie stars doing shitty accents in these movies. Why not just hire French actors? Or if you must, bilingual French/English speaking actors to speak English so they at least have legitimate accents, if the big movie stars can't pull it off. Jodie Comer was fantastic and accurate in The Last Duel, then you have Matt Damon and Ben Affleck doing whatever it is they're doing.

Luckily for you, there are probably many French-language movies about Napoleon you can watch

At the very least we should expect consistency. We should have a standard.

Again, just consistency. If you're going to have one guy speaking with an English accent and another with a French one, and they're both supposed to be French, it's just stupid. It says they're not taking the project seriously.

I think this is probably fair, I'm surprised they didn't get on the same page about this

I don't care much about proper accents. And I'd take great acting over correct accents any day of the week.

Surely there are great actors with appropriate accents. It doesn't have to be either/or. Give a French actor a chance instead of going with Matt friggin' Damon ffs.

If anything Jared Leto's accent enhanced my enjoyment of Gucci.

Can you name them? No you can't, and that's why they'll never make a big budget Hollywood movie with French actors.
And anyway, it's about communicating ideas, even in historical biopics. To do that you have to speak the language of the audience, not the actual people. If it were made in Hollywood, would you expect everyone to be French? No you would not.
You understand nothing about art!
