I had an Elastica phase earlier in the year. Even though the Wire ripoffs are totally shameless I tend to enjoy them more than the actual Wire songs. Some really great 2 minute singles on that first record. I never tracked down the second album apart from hearing tracks on live boots or BBC sessions.
I was really shocked when people were so negative about The Menace when it came out. It was one of my favorite albums of the year. KB, Human, Mad Dog, Generator, The Way I Like It...a lot of good tracks on it. It just doesn't sound like the first album.
The BBC Sessions CD is probably the best distillation of what made they great, though.

I find myself throwing "Wax Ecstatic" on surprisingly often.

This band's debut album was great, but everything after it was terrible.

Aww man, don't leave out Urban Hymns. Yeah, it was super commercial and huge, but it's just as beautiful as A Storm in Heaven and A Northern Soul.

Fair enough. And yes, the b-sides are great too. No Come Down is just as necessary as the first three studio records (I never really got into Forth).
