Last night I discovered the Gibson S-1 which looks like an awesome guitar (minus the bolt-on neck)

I'm saying it's a Gibson guitar, with the tonal range of a Fender Jaguar, but actually more, because it can also do a humbucker mode, and it can use the neck and tail pickups in an out-of-phase configuration.

It's kind of my dream guitar now, except for that dang bolt-on neck.

Papa Wease has a ‘61 Les Paul Junior, single pickup. It’s the SG design before Les left and they started calling it the SG. So that’s what I learned to play on. After that, I got a ‘77 Les Paul Custom and that’s been my primary guitar since high school.

That thing had better sound like a million bucks, because that Flying V style headstock is awful. One of the reasons Gibson's Ripper bass is far more sought after than the Grabber, no doubt.

I was constantly worried about scratching it or bending a string so hard as to mess up the intonation or something.

This is actually pretty funny when you consider Gibsons will break in half at the top nut if you look at them funny.

Also the tuners are flimsy as heck.

I've owned guitars from virtually all of the classic brands at some point but never a Gibson, I guess that says something.

I do have a lot of fondness for the non-reverse Firebird design:

Interesting insight there Spenno. How did your model play?

It belonged to a friend/bandmate and this was at least 20 years ago, so I don't really trust my recollection at this point.

I think it was fine but I was also probably less discerning then.

Honestly I've played fenders that feel awful in my hands and fenders that feel amazing in my hands. Same with gibsons. It really depends. Aesthetically? Love fenders more.

Les Paul's are also too heavy and I love my SG
