My favorite stage musicals based on non-musical movies:
5. American Psycho: Fittingly ridiculous partially-Jukebox-type musical, featuring excerpts from a bunch of 80s song including, yes, "Hip to Be Square." They even wrote in a song about the business cards.
4. Groundhog Day: Really sweet and funny, with the most understated ending I've ever seen for a musical (no grand finale, it just kind of ends on a very gentle note). Good music, with songs written by Tim Minchin.
3. Legally Blonde: It lives or dies based entirely on the likability of the actress playing Elle, but overall a ton of fun. They gave Paulette (Jennifer Coolidge's character form the movie) a weird subplot about wanting to visit Ireland, which culminates in a big stepdance sequence.
2. Shrek: Better than any Shrek movie, which is not a very tall bar to clear as the Shrek movies are actually kind of bad. But it's hard not to love this version of the story, which makes Fiona a more interesting character, amps up the romance, and ends with a full cast performance of "I'm a Believer."
1. Beetlejuice: Just spectacular. The Broadway version (which I got to see Halloween 2022) has some really cool stage design and special effects, and Alex Brightman steals the show. Extremely funny. The music is wild, with very energetic songs that jump very suddenly between genres.
Honorable mentions: Heathers, The Witches of Eastwick, The Toxic Avenger.

I don't know if it's just the production I saw but I really hated it. Just crazy unfunny, with totally out-of-character writing and a bunch of pop culture references. At one point a character wears a yellow outfit and Gomez says "You look like a Minion!"
Gomez Addams would not know what a Minion is

I saw Phantom of the Opera when I was like 14 and thought it kicked ass. Probably the huge chandelier swinging over the crowd stunt, but I liked all of it.
