As as-seen-on-TV CD compilations go, none were as prevalent in the collections of my 5th/6th grade peers as those in the ESPN Jock Rock/Jams seriesE.H. Re: The CD Thread: Still Listen On Disc, Don't Stream
I still have my entire CD collection and it takes up way too much unjustified space in the garage. But I like knowing it’s there.
The only time I listen to them is in the car which has a 6 disc changer. I buy new CD’s pretty much only from PJ, Ed, Tool, AIC anymore and will pop that newest one in the changer but leave the other 5.
So I end up listening to the Mechanical Bull album by Kings Of Leon A LOT.

Re: The CD Thread: Still Listen On Disc, Don't Stream
I try to limit the number of instances in my life where I fall back on the shortsighted "I like doing it this way because I've always done it this way" mantra, but we're all entitled to a few things like that, and I can't deny that there is an element of that at play in my continued fondness for CD's. I just like them. That said, part of how you choose to do anything is knowing yourself and what works for you, and I learned during the downloading era that I'm not well-built for an environment where I have everything at my fingertips just a click away. In that type of scenario, I constantly shift the focus off what I'm listening to and begin to obsess over what else there is to listen to, and end up depriving myself of the kinds of listening experiences that I know are the richest and most valuable for me. There are a lot of other little things I enjoy about CD's, but that's probably the most continually practical one -- right or wrong, it's just the format that has consistently led me to the most satisfying listening experiences.
I don't know where I fall on the audiophile spectrum -- I certainly care about how things sound, but I'm not an audio gear person at all and don't really have the money or space to build anything complicated -- but to me there is a "listening psychology" component to format choice that is equally if not more material to most people's habits than just playback quality.

who told you to do this?tragabigzanda wrote:An RMer texted me to challenge this, so I'll rephrase:tragabigzanda wrote:Happy Trees wrote:It's funny how people forget that vinyl was declared passé in 1985 (for legit reasons), but everyone was told to throw them away and a lot of people did.
Now it's the opposite. Vinyl is cool and sounds warm and analog, and CD's are passé. Nothing going on there. Yes, Pearl Jam bought into this bullshit, and then proceeded to press vinyl from shitty CD masterings as if they knew what was going on, as people play them on their half-ass setups and jag themselves into infinity.
Informed scrutiny reveals that vinyl is easy to make in small runs and then majorly overcharge for, and they can put it in CD box sets as filler whether you like it or not to double the price, which most people will gladly pay. "Record Store Day" is also an ironic way to brainwash people into accepting this while picking their pockets at the expense of rare, desirable music that isn't made available digitally.
And as a digital platform, streaming and downloading has no manufacturing costs and record companies get most of the revenue because older recording artists have no clauses or overlooked the future and cannot collect the royalties they deserve.
But get with the times, Grandpa.![]()
The streaming music landscape is a rich buffet if you're not an audiophile, and I take no issue with it at face value. If you are an audiophile, it's a disaster of competing proprietary codecs, technical snake oil, and ridiculous restrictions placed on devices by their manufacturers.
I see no value for CDs for either group. Even the SACD audiophile market is beholden to limited product runs, inflated prices, and a seller's market for audiophile CD transports. Put them all in the landfill and let Daniel Ek do donuts on top in his Lamborghini.
Apple device Bluetooth is worse than CDs, because it's all lossy codecs. But Android device bluetooth can outperform CDs, depending on your device. But then you're chasing codecs.
But if you use a wired connection for either Apple or Android, then you're better than CD.

Re: The CD Thread: Still Listen On Disc, Don't Stream
It has nothing to do with audiophilia at all. It has everything to do with manipulation, control and abuse of the artists and the consumers.tragabigzanda wrote:The streaming music landscape is a rich buffet if you're not an audiophile, and I take no issue with it at face value. CD's were deliberately killed for sinister reasons and there is no reason they shouldn't always exist alongside streaming. Like with anything else, the landscape that was created (stopping the manufacture of CD players and removing them as a choice) is viewed as a result of popular demand rather than causing that lack of demand. Of course people are going to go along with it without thinking about it, wowed by the false illusion of convenience and a song and dance about it being antiquated and unnecessary.
And the fact that vinyl is a big ticket item marketed as a blanket alternative audiophile choice with no context (or quality control) that is largely consumed by people who have no understanding of it's likely value as a nostalgic coaster, is proof enough that there's a man behind the curtain.
