As as-seen-on-TV CD compilations go, none were as prevalent in the collections of my 5th/6th grade peers as those in the ESPN Jock Rock/Jams seriesE.H. RSD hasn’t offered anything desirable in ages.Happy Trees wrote:"Record Store Day" is also an ironic way to brainwash people into accepting this while picking their pockets at the expense of rare, desirable music that isn't made available digitally.
who told you to do this?tragabigzanda wrote:An RMer texted me to challenge this, so I'll rephrase:tragabigzanda wrote:Happy Trees wrote:It's funny how people forget that vinyl was declared passé in 1985 (for legit reasons), but everyone was told to throw them away and a lot of people did.
Now it's the opposite. Vinyl is cool and sounds warm and analog, and CD's are passé. Nothing going on there. Yes, Pearl Jam bought into this bullshit, and then proceeded to press vinyl from shitty CD masterings as if they knew what was going on, as people play them on their half-ass setups and jag themselves into infinity.
Informed scrutiny reveals that vinyl is easy to make in small runs and then majorly overcharge for, and they can put it in CD box sets as filler whether you like it or not to double the price, which most people will gladly pay. "Record Store Day" is also an ironic way to brainwash people into accepting this while picking their pockets at the expense of rare, desirable music that isn't made available digitally.
And as a digital platform, streaming and downloading has no manufacturing costs and record companies get most of the revenue because older recording artists have no clauses or overlooked the future and cannot collect the royalties they deserve.
But get with the times, Grandpa.![]()
The streaming music landscape is a rich buffet if you're not an audiophile, and I take no issue with it at face value. If you are an audiophile, it's a disaster of competing proprietary codecs, technical snake oil, and ridiculous restrictions placed on devices by their manufacturers.
I see no value for CDs for either group. Even the SACD audiophile market is beholden to limited product runs, inflated prices, and a seller's market for audiophile CD transports. Put them all in the landfill and let Daniel Ek do donuts on top in his Lamborghini.
Apple device Bluetooth is worse than CDs, because it's all lossy codecs. But Android device bluetooth can outperform CDs, depending on your device. But then you're chasing codecs.
But if you use a wired connection for either Apple or Android, then you're better than CD.

It has nothing to do with audiophilia at all. It has everything to do with manipulation, control and abuse of the artists and the consumers.tragabigzanda wrote:The streaming music landscape is a rich buffet if you're not an audiophile, and I take no issue with it at face value.
