Probably my favorite PJ song. The studio recording is pretty much perfect. I slightly prefer the lyrical change of the live versions at the end:
It's supposed to be just fun Never to be tried nor be a judge
That really hits the spot for me.
Another interesting thing that makes this song kind of unique, which I'm not sure is noticed by many people, is the slightly odd song structure which ends on a verse instead of a chorus. Another oddity...there are no repeated lyrics in the entire song, with the exception of "I don't want to take what you can give".
Yet, somehow it's just a perfect tune. And quintessential Pearl Jam at that.

I hate the lyrical changes he makes live. Especially when he sings "I figure we'll all be damned, all alone like we began." I understand making some songs inclusive, but not this one. It's a navel-gazing, tormented, claustrophobic song, not a celebration of how we're all alike.

Note to self: Start a Pearl Jam cover band called "We Are Ours" and just change every Pearl Jam song to be inclusive of everyone.
"We will hold the candles, till they burn up our arms..."
"We're still alive..."
"We got memories, we got shit..."
"Don't call us daughter..."

We did what we had to do, if there was a reason, it was us...
Footsteps in the hall, it was us, us, oh-oh-oh-oh, pictures on our chest, it was us

We take a walk outside. We're surrounded by...some kids that play.
We can feel their laughter...so why do we sear?*
And twisted thoughts they spin...around our heads. We're spinning. Oh, we're spinning...
*or whatever he says here

There's this live track out there that's acoustic and slowed way down. It might just be Ed. Anyone know what that's from?
