I enjoyed Huckabees. It's got some really great performances in it, and a handful of scenes that played out magnificently.
I also enjoyed this quite a bit, so

Re: silver linings playbook
i saw this movie and didn't think it was bad. it was pretty much what it set out to be - entertaining and a bit silly - what was it supposed to be? you guys are some harsh critics.

My favorite part of that clip is poor Naomi Watts can't help but giggle at the absurdity of it all, and Lily Tomlin starts yelling at her too.McParadigm wrote:I enjoyed Huckabees. It's got some really great performances in it, and a handful of scenes that played out magnificently.

I like that Hoffman is torn between "calm the shit down, you crazy bitch," genuine sympathetic frustration, and mostly a desire to get the scene filmed and finished. He just doesn't know what the hell to do.

Re: silver linings playbook
i think the implication for liking a movie like this one is that one has rather pedestrian tastes and isn't bothered by a lack of nuance. in general, i get that many of the people posting about movies (and books too) here are very academically well versed in literature and movies, and tend to look for subtlety and a more intrinsic 'value' to the movies and books they see and read - and I can appreciate that. but sometimes it's nice to see a movie (or read a book) that's just there to give you a few laughs or evoke a couple of 'aaawww' moments out of you without feeling insulted by the movie maker or author for underestimating our intellectual prowess.theplatypus wrote:Did anybody in this thread imply this?Chloe wrote:If that makes me a shitty movie fan,

It is very artificial, and emotionally unaffecting.

Re: silver linings playbook
There are a million reasons to like a movie, and a million more to dislike it. I just had a 10-page discussion in another forum about why I think Love Actually is a beautiful flick, when a few other folks contended that it was a bunch of vacuous feel-good pap. I think we all respected each other enough, and were confident enough in our own tastes, not to try to turn it into a discussion about our intellectual prowess or lack thereof. I don't know why some movies connect and some others don't. I loved As Good As It Gets, but it's guilty of some of the same things I accused Silver Linings Playbook of. The latter just missed the mark for me.
You should read that comment as "Argo didn't like the movie."Chloe wrote:uhm... how else should I read this comment then?

I know that means Argo thought it was a shitty movie, hence my comment of being a shitty movie fan.
