I really enjoy SC and a lot of Doughty's solo stuff as well.

His memoir The Book of Drugs is an interesting read. He REALLY, REALLY hated the other guys in Soul Coughing.

And while I agree that he can come off as smug in a lot of situations, I thought that was mostly absent from the book, which was nice. He's self deprecating and pretty vulnerable. I of course have no way of knowing how much spin he's putting on the stories he tells, but he comes off more as lazy and stupid (and regretful) than an angel.
