This one was tough but i went with Cold Confession.

both are amazing but I feel like Cold Confession reached a level that Dead Man would have if the entire band had built on it like they did with cold confession.

i think dead man would lose so, so much if it was a full band piece

Agreed; it needs that kind of desolate isolation that the limited lineup provides.

i think so too....

But I think Cold Confession took a similar piece and successfully captured what the band can do with an ed song. I love it for that.

I really love that freedom that is prevalent in the No Code (and Binaural) sessions. It really feels like anything was fair game. You could go in and cut Dead Man, or Hail, Hail, or Sunburn. They had such a great and diverse array of options at their disposal.

both are great, but dead man captures a vibe totally unique amongst their catalog. i'm not sure CC is going somewhere that they hadn't gone before.

I'd like to hear the full Cold Confession someday. Apparently it was cut down from a massive 17-minute jam.

my instinct is that whatever they did in those seventeen minutes is leagues better than any seventeen minute stretch on any of their last three records

dead man

CC is great

but it's like comparing the Bible to an episode of Grey's Anatomy

but CC is great

they could have cut 17 minutes from LB and just stuck CC on there

or not cut 17 minutes and just started playing 17 minutes of CC over top of existing LB tracks

just like having them play at the same time

Just heard CC for the first time ever... WoW! What a tough day in the iso-booth for Mr. Vedder! He definitely smoked one too many American Spirits that day. The song may be good, musically, but I can definitely see why they didn't want it released. Not only are the vocals an in-studio train wreck, but Ed rubs your nose in the shit at the end, like he thinks he's a fucking Pavarotti or something... and it's too much like Army Reserve, too.

Dead Man, on the other hand, is indeed a top-shelf PJ song.

nO way. Vedders vocals are intentional with that tune. Perfect.

I voted for "Dead Man" because it's the better song, but I really like the vocals in "Cold Confession". Very emotional performance, the vulnerable and crackly delivery well suited to the song.
