The thing is I'm ok with the notion of " bouncy, playful, older inversion of the self-righteous standoffishness" but it doesn't make any sense in the specific song. It's just there (in the verses) an that's about all there is to say about it.

Getaway was my favorite Lightning Bolt song at first; it's dropped quite a bit since then, but there's some okay things to it.

But yeah, even in my most positive appraisal of it, that song would never have a shot here.

If this was Doug Getaway, I would have voted for it

There is exactly zero chance that DG would not have won the entire tournament, thus summarizing everything we know or suspect about this board and it's relationship with the band.

This would've been the best lyric on LB.

This was an easy one. Just thinking of the subtle guitar licks in the first 8-15 seconds of the studio version of Not For You makes me pop a half-boner.

It remains my least favorite song on my favorite album.

Not For You was one of the first songs I really really loved... but each year it slips farther done the list for me.
If they first wrote that song now, I bet half the people on this board would be saying how lame it is lyrically, "its like hes saying fuck you but now hes too grown up to say it so hes trying to be all clever and wordy without actually saying it, what happened to our band that had balls 20 years ago, theyre so washed up they havnt written a good song since Yield"

I did always wonder what a common rule was, now that you mention it. Is it like...

Common rule: If you hate something, don't you do it, too.
Uncommon rule: Most painful bathroom problems can be handled by smearing cheese on your butt.

Or is it more of a Goofus/Gallant thing?

Gallant knows, if you hate something, you shouldn't do it to others.
Goofus is a rapist. Stone cold.

Isn't the Common Rule a concept involving human research subjects? I always took to it be a reference to him feeling like he was living under a microscope.

I took it as a variation on the golden rule, especially given the follow up line.

I'm not at all sure that I agree with said rule in the first place. That's it I'm changing my vote.

I guess I'm still just reeling from finding out that if this song came out today instead of in 1994 I'd hate it. I'm glad someone told me.

You should hate it anyway. Its post 1992 Jones Beach 45 minute Lollapolooza set Pearl Jam.

Imagine what a teary-eyed, treasured gem Future Days would be, if it had been a Vs outtake. Probably a contest winner, too.

Did we ever find out where in the 45 minute set Pearl Jam peaked? With a little research, we could probably pinpoint the exact moment they reached their zenith. We could maybe even make a gif of it.
