I think the whole song is beautiful. "Satan's Bed" is fun, but it can't compete

I'm pretty sure Present Tense is the song that made me fall in love with Pearl Jam when I was like 13

...and I would never fucking skip the first 2 minutes of it.

I do love both of these songs. Very different intentions, very different executions, but something is shared in the way that they balance performance and studio.

A long time ago I picked up on a snare drum rattling in response to the guitar's volume, sometime during the first half of Present Tense. But I don't remember where it was, and I listened just now and didn't hear a thing. Ahh, well.

I always thought those little moments on Vitalogy/No Code were so cool....just a bunch of little claustrophobic reminders of confined space, like a glimpse into the cage or like getting to walk around the medical research lab where they saved your life, or something.

I've always considered myself to have pretty good hearing. Even going into my 30's I still retained a lot of the much higher frequencies that most people often lose the ability to hear (i.e. the natural degradation of the tiny ear drum hairs). But even after the countless times I've listened to Present Tense, I've never picked up on that. I somehow have the need to hear it now, I'll listen again with some good headphones and report back.

To 16 year old me, Present Tense was one of those revolutionary, change your life, I-never-knew-it-could-be-this-way, speaking-to-my-best-self, brainbusting songs.

It's just lovely. Everything about it is lovely.

To my 16 year old self: Hold tight. Present Tense is still 6 years away. Its barely even gestating in the loins of the lead singer of a horricrappy band Bad Radio.

To my 16 year old self: don't be put off by the Who You Are launch single. The album is amazing, and you will love it in time (it will really grow on you). Don't wait almost a year to actually listen to it.

Also, wear 2 condoms, and "unload your weapons earlier in the night". You don't want her to laugh at your premature ejaculation and your small penis.
