Classic tune. This always had the same feeling behind it as "My Generation" to me. (tho my generation is about my father's generation).
This music and so called teen angst is ours, don't try and understand it - It is Not for You.
I know the back story to the song it but it is lyrically so simple it is easy to interpret how you want.

I love the slides that slash through the end of NFY. I'd put the last :90 of NFY up against just about anything.

I will say, this is closer than I gave it credit for. Grievance is fucking great.

I'm in the minority but I find Grievance extremely overrated.

Ugh. Tough one, but I think I gotta go "Not For You." "Grievance" is a good song, but there's at least three others on Binaural that I can emphatically say I like more. "Not For You," on the other hand, is probably my favorite Pearl Jam song not on Binaural. It's another top ten/five star/whatever song for me.

I hate to see that Binaural is going to be virtually wiped out in this round. "Insignificance" will advance, "Nothing as it Seems" might, too, and I'm crossing my fingers for "Sleight of Hand," but it's sad to see my favorite PJ album fall out of contention so quickly. It was doing really well, early in the tournament!

I was all set to vote for Grievance until I listened to both studio versions on headphones last night. Not For You just destroys it in terms of the amount of angst and energy that comes pouring through the song.

I find Grievance to be much more melodramatic than Not for You.

Well you know, you might be right... and I'd like to be able to change my vote back to Grievance because it's the much more well-written song... but that studio version just sounds so neutered to me.

im having the exact opposite reaction. 'not for you' lost all its intensity live over the years.

It's a shell of its former self... but I judged these songs based on their peak performances... N4U kills Grievance... and I love both!

I love grievance in the studio. Its such a unique production. Its not the typical pearl jam rocker produced song with overdriven guitars slamming into your dome. The song is naturally aggressive it speaks for itself. The guitars dont need to be cranked up to 11 or saturated with distortion. It's so perfect as is. There is subtlety to the playing. Intricacies that weave in and out of each other. every single part of the song gets together and....oh they do the dance.

Love Grievance--love, love, love, and I'm happy that Binaural in general is showing up for the tournament. But...c'mon now. I jokingly posted in one of the previous rounds that those guitar licks in the first 20 seconds or so of Not For You give me something akin to sexual pleasure...but the more I think about it, the more that I think there's really no better way to describe it. Grievance has some fascinating elements--like the guitar parts at the beginning that sorta sound like bells or something--but Not For You does great things with space, understatement, and aggression. Hot damn, I am going to fire up the turntable and listen to Vitalogy right now just so I can get to it.

Yeah, that's a great performance, but it's not enough to change my vote. There's great performances of NFY out there too.
