I don't think Indifference has anything at all to do with death in the sense that the other songs do. I can add it if you really want. I think it makes more sense to add the end or sirens before Indifference.

They just seemed a little too platitudinal, I guess. A lot of what's in those songs feels like the stuff you think a year after the fact, or like the little moments of sudden reflective sadness that strike you at odd times six months down the road. Some of them are totally detached from the experience, altogether (Sad). Or that was how it was for me.

There is a natural anger, and a very personal quality to the melancholy that accompanies great loss, and it's hard to capture in song. For me, there were a lot of moments in other songs that were about living rather than about death that felt suddenly very heartbreaking and yet impactful, in a grieving kind of way. They were more rumination-focused, or wistfully wishful in a very in-actionable way. As far as Pearl Jam songs, the verses of Present Tense or Wishlist might come closest to what that was.
This is a nice post.

I'd like to nominate "Release" for inclusion. Would be a tough call between that and "Long Road" for me.

Say Hello to Heaven. Temple of the Dog is close enough to count.

Thinking about this a bit tonight I think the reason none of pearl jams death songs really resonate with me is because in the moment I usually experience loss as guilt.

THIS may really be the most ridiculous of all RM threads, and YES that includes the Iholdthepiss thread...

BTW, my vote is for the song, Red Mosquito

In all seriousness, there's a pretty significant reason why Long Road was played in Hartford last year... as well as during the 9/11 telethon with Neil. If there is a 'winner' it should be LR.

Doesn't mean it does the best job of encompassing/describing the experience. I think it is a great song but it has never moved me.

well I think the biggest reason that song was played during the 9-11 Telethon with Neil was that Neil plays on it. I'm in the same boat. It's a lovely song but it's never elicited a powerful emotion reaction from me.
