His first night at RCMH (I was there) he played for just under an hour and left the stage with no explanation. He didn't come back. Some said he was pissed that too many tickets were scalped and that the wrong kind of crowd was seated up front. Some said he was pissed at the sound of the space. Some said he was pissed because most of the crowd wanted to sit there and not get into the show. I've been to RCMH a few times and that's a legit complaint, I think. People who go there to see shows don't treat them like rock concerts. They just sit there and nod their heads. It's kind of obnoxious.
But Jack played a blistering 55 minute set that included a new arrangement of Dead Leaves and blew my mind. It was just a really short show. There were conspiratorial whispers that Jack would come back out after a long break. They said he was trying to make the less enthusiastic leave the show so he could put on a show for his "real fans."
That didn't happen. After about 30 mins they announced over the intercom that Jack had left the building. He was clearly pissed about something. He kept making comments during the show regarding the lack of enthusiasm from the crowd.
So he left and a ton of people got refunds on their merch. I even heard a few people say they learned he was staying at the Ace Hotel and they were going over there "to kick his ass."
Whatever. It was an amazing show for the hour that he played. I felt a bit cheated, of course. But I'm spoiled. I'm used to seeing PJ play for damn near three hours. It was a short show, but he put everything he had into it. I was feeling it and I'm glad I was there.
The next night he played for 90 mins, but didn't talk between songs. He just blew threw his set as fast as possible and left. I wasn't there for that.

Spenno's all-consuming hatred for Jack White is the funniest thing.
"Fastest record ever" gimmick aside, that's a pretty good song.

Re: "there is no Original Ray's"-- I thought the real original original Ray's was the one on West 11th and Sixth Avenue.
I think the first pizza place in NYC with the Ray's name was on Prince street. It's a different pizza place now. The one on 11th was actually the second, but it was the first "Original Ray's". I think.
Ralph Cuomo opened the first Ray's Pizza, at 27 Prince Street in Little Italy, in 1959, named after his nickname "Raffie". In the 1960s he briefly owned a second Ray's Pizza, but sold it to Rosolino Mangano in 1964. Mangano kept the name and later falsely claimed that his was the first.

I could imagine someone uncritically tolerating this largely featureless, unremarkable collection of sounds as they might the reassuringly bland artwork in a doctor’s office but to express genuine preference this music, above all other potential options, is frankly mind-boggling.
